PPR Compressed Air Piping Standards: Check Product Approval

On 9 December 2024, Aquatherm revised its bulletin to discontinue green and blue piping for new compressed-gas applications in North America. That dated product restriction matters more than an older brochure listing compressed air. Read the manufacturer’s current bulletin.

PPR compressed air piping standards do not provide a blanket approval or a blanket worldwide ban. PPI lists compressed air as a PP application when the pipe manufacturer approves it. Specify the exact system, obtain current written authorization for the service, and have the project’s applicable code and design requirements checked before ordering. PPI’s application guidance makes manufacturer approval a condition.

Key takeaways: A water-system standard, a pressure marking and a gas-service authorization answer different questions. This guide is for engineers and buyers reviewing a compressed-air specification. It is not a pressure-testing procedure or an approval of IFANPRO products for air service.

Separate component standards from project approval

Start with scope. A component specification establishes what a product must meet within its stated application; a piping code governs a project’s design and construction where adopted. Neither a logo nor a standard number can establish that every pipe carrying it is suitable for your air line.

ASTM F2389-26 is the active edition in the issuing catalogue, checked 5 October 2026. Its scope covers PP components for water supply and distribution, heating, irrigation and listed industrial-fluid applications. Note 1 advises consulting the manufacturer about fluid compatibility and acceptable service life. The newest publication is not automatically the edition adopted for your project. Calling it “water only” loses that distinction; treating it as unrestricted gas approval loses the safety boundary. ISO 15874-1:2013 addresses building hot/cold-water and heating installations.

ASME B31.3-2024 includes air within its process-piping scope. The engineer must determine whether that code and edition apply to the project and assess its actual requirements. ISO 10380:2012 concerns corrugated metal hose assemblies. It is not an umbrella standard governing all compressed-air piping.

Check the latest product and regional restrictions

Permission is product-specific. Aquatherm’s North American bulletin stops new green and blue compressed-gas applications and distinguishes completed or already-underway projects from projects starting after the notice; the former have conditional warranty provisions. Do not export that regional policy to every PP-R brand or assume a previous approval remains valid for a new project.

Request a dated manufacturer response naming the pipe series, fittings, transitions, intended medium and installation region. An approval for one product family does not transfer to a lookalike pipe with a similar wall ratio. Resolve conflicts between a catalogue and a later technical notice before issuing a purchase order.

Rules also differ by jurisdiction. California Title 8, section 462 includes manufacturer recommendation and compliance with manufacturer instructions among its requirements for plastic compressed-air piping under subsection (m)(3). That subsection also sets material, rating, marking and testing conditions; recommendation alone is insufficient. This is a California example, not a global rule. Identify the authority and adopted requirements for the actual installation.

Write the compressed-air service specification

Define the duty before asking which diameter or pressure class to buy. A proposed specification should record design pressure and temperature together, maximum service conditions, cycling, compressor lubricant, condensate, treatment chemicals and the installation environment. Have the manufacturer confirm the allowable operating envelope for those conditions and the required design life.

Use a drawing-linked system schedule. Identify resin/product series, outside diameter, wall series, fitting family, connection method, threaded or flanged transitions, valve suitability and any reinforcement. Require the supporting rating document and its conditions for each selected component. The approval must cover the assembled system, including its interfaces.

Hold a quote that substitutes a water pressure marking for a written gas-service rating. An illustrative purchasing scenario: a plant specifies an oil-lubricated compressor and an exposed distribution run, but the offer supplies only a water catalogue. Send the actual lubricant and environment to the manufacturer; obtain a documented suitability decision or select another approved system. A cheaper unit price cannot close that evidence gap.

Control installation and pressure-test evidence

Installation instructions belong to the selected system. PPI’s joining guidance warns that PP fusion procedures differ from HDPE procedures. Require the manufacturer’s current joining method, qualified installer requirements, equipment settings, support layout and inspection criteria; do not transfer a familiar procedure from another polymer or brand.

Separate operating authorization from the test plan. Aquatherm’s safety bulletin explains why compressed-gas failure can release more energy than an equivalent incompressible-fluid test. The project engineer should specify an approved examination and testing procedure, with the manufacturer’s restrictions incorporated. This page supplies no universal pneumatic test pressure, duration or exclusion distance.

A leak-free commissioning result does not settle long-term gas-service suitability. Preserve joint inspection records, component traceability, the approved test method and acceptance results alongside the design documents. If the procedure or product authorization is missing, keep the installation on hold.

Compare complete systems before requesting a quote

Compare offers against the approved specification. Separate pipe and fittings from valves, transitions, supports, tooling, installation, inspection and documentation. A quotation for bare pipe is not comparable with an installed, commissioned system. Ask suppliers to identify exclusions and substitutions explicitly so the engineer can assess their effect.

The IFANPRO PPR pipe and fittings catalogue is a starting point for product identification. Catalogue presence does not establish compressed-air approval. Request exact product documentation before considering any item for gas service; if that authorization cannot be provided, use a system approved for the intended duty.

For an enquiry, send the drawing and bill of materials, installation country, approved service envelope and required document list. Request minimum order by item, tooling charges, quotation basis, payment terms and lead time after technical approval. Ask whether preproduction pieces are available for engineering review. No current IFANPRO MOQ, price or delivery period is asserted here. Keep technical release separate from commercial acceptance.

Release the purchase order against a checklist

Use this proposed release checklist with the project engineer and buyer. A missing safety document is a hold point; do not replace it with a certificate title or a verbal assurance.

  1. Record the applicable jurisdiction, code and edition.
  2. Obtain current manufacturer authorization for the exact system and compressed-air duty.
  3. Confirm the pressure–temperature envelope, media compatibility and environmental restrictions.
  4. Approve the component schedule and all transitions or substitutions.
  5. Approve joining, support, examination and testing requirements.
  6. Match supplied product markings and traceability to the approved documents.
  7. Close quotation exclusions, order quantities, samples and delivery milestones before release.

Release only when the technical evidence and the commercial offer refer to the same system. Otherwise hold the order and request the missing record.

For engineers and procurement teams with a defined piping specification: send the exact product schedule and required approval documents to IFANPRO. Ask for product identification and available evidence before discussing an order.

Frequently asked questions

Can ordinary PPR water pipe be used for compressed air?

Do not infer suitability from a water rating. PPI identifies compressed air as an application when the manufacturer approves the pipe. The exact system also needs a documented service envelope and compliance with the project’s applicable requirements.

Does an ASTM or ISO marking approve compressed-air service?

A marking identifies a standard whose scope must be checked. ASTM lists F2389-26 as active, but the project’s adopted edition must be confirmed. Neither that listing nor ISO 15874 provides blanket compressed-air approval. Request product-specific authorization and the documents required by the project engineer.

What changed in Aquatherm’s compressed-air guidance?

The bulletin revised on 9 December 2024 discontinued new green and blue compressed-gas applications in North America. Completed or already-underway projects have conditional warranty provisions; later-started projects do not. Check the current bulletin for the exact situation.

Does passing a pressure test prove the material is suitable?

A test result records performance under the approved test conditions. It does not substitute for manufacturer gas-service authorization or the project’s design review. Retain both suitability documents and test records.
