Four claims appear on almost every supplier page in this trade: we are a factory not a trading company, we hold ISO 9001, we hold international water-contact approvals, and we do OEM. Three of those four leave a public record somewhere. One does not. Knowing which is which is most of the skill.
The claim with no register behind it is the OEM capability claim. There is no database of who can cut a mould and who subcontracts it, so that one is settled by a drawing, a tooling quotation and a first-article sample — not by reading. The other three are checkable from your desk, for free, before you send a single enquiry.
Manufacturer or trading company: the identifier that settles it
The distinction matters more in pipe than in most categories, because a trading company consolidating from four small workshops cannot hold a single approval covering what it ships to you. Business licences in China are issued by the State Administration for Market Regulation, and every registered entity carries an 18-character Unified Social Credit Identifier that serves as both its registration number with SAMR and its taxpayer identifier with the State Taxation Administration.
That identifier is the thread you pull. It should be identical on the business licence, on the quotation, on the contract, on the bank account details, and on the certificate records discussed below. Open the WRAS approvals directory and search the approval number or the company name. A real record returns four fields that matter and one that traps people.

Two things are worth pointing at. The holder address in the register matches our published address character for character, which is the entity cross-check from the previous section completing successfully — that is what a clean result looks like. And the approval covers one pipe, IFAN2100-2. It is not evidence about our PPR fittings, our brass valves or our HDPE, and if we cited it as though it were, you would now be able to catch us doing it.

Almost every China sourcing guide in circulation tells you to verify an ISO 9001 certificate through IAF CertSearch. That advice is now out of date, and the body itself says so.
The International Accreditation Forum’s own website carries this notice: “IAF ceased operations on 01 January 2026. This website is a legacy site maintained for archival/reference purposes only. For current information, please visit the Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated Website.” The CertSearch database it operated held over 1.6 million accredited management system certificates.
Why this matters more than it sounds
ISO 9001 certificates are the most commonly decorative certificate in this trade, because the failure mode is subtle. A certificate can be genuine, issued by a real certification body, and still be worth very little — if that certification body is not itself accredited by a recognised accreditation body, nobody has audited the auditor. The whole value of the accreditation chain is that somebody checked upstream.
So the useful question is not “do you have ISO 9001” but “which body issued it and who accredits them”. Ask for the certificate number and the certification body name together. Because banks examine documents rather than goods. Under UCP 600 Article 14(b) a bank has a maximum of five banking days after presentation to rule on compliance, and a name mismatch surfaces there — with the goods already shipped.
